Father Cillo died after a brief illness in 1958, after serving Mother of Sorrows for 43 years. The bishop asked Father Joseph Farina, one of five priest brothers in the diocese, to become the next pastor. The following year, the rectory, church and auditorium were renovated. Committed to a solid program of religious instruction for the young, Father Farina sent thirty-five parishioners to Duquesne University for training in doctrine and methods.
That same year, Father Weirauch began a campaign to raise the funds necessary for additional classrooms at Saint Malachy School, while Father Krysmalski’s request for an assistant priest at Holy Trinity was realized when the bishop assigned Father George Saladna. Membership had reached 800 families. At Saint Vincent de Paul, Father Joseph Girdis was appointed pastor in 1959. Under his administration, an addition was made to the auditorium of the grade school building, and it was converted to use as the worship space in 1962.
1960 was a momentous year. Father Philip Moore, long time pastor at Saint Francis de Sales retired, and was replaced by Father Michael Cusick. The first Catholic President, John F. Kennedy, was elected to the highest office of the country. Here in Pittsburgh, under a new bishop, John Wright, SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish celebrated its Golden Jubilee. In preparation for this milestone, the church and school underwent a complete renovation.
Parishes were still building and expanding from the post-war boom. Because additional space was necessary for the religious instruction of children, Mother of Sorrows sought permission to use rooms in the Norwood School and Fenton School for this purpose. A decision was made to purchase property and build a catechetical center, along with a convent for the Sisters who would administer the religious instruction. The parish ended up purchasing the old Ohio Valley Hospital for this project.
That October, Father Istocin resigned his pastorate at Saint Mark because of ill health. Bishop Wright appointed Father John Sima to be the new pastor. Construction of a permanent rectory at Holy Trinity began late in the year. It included offices, as well as suites for the priests and housekeepers, and was completed in 1961, the same year that a convent and the additional classrooms at Saint Malachy were dedicated.
